THE TEAM APPROACH
TOWARD WELLNESS

Our team of specialists is dedicated to helping you return to an active, fulfilling lifestyle.  Neck pain, back pain and sciatica (nerve pain) are common problems that can seriously affect your lifestyle.  At The Spine Institute, we can help you control or eliminate your pain using the latest techniques.

PHILOSOPHY
Pain can be caused by many different factors, so we treat the whole person-physically, mentally and emotionally.
We believe in a team approach to back care.  You will be assisted by a group of spine experts, which includes physicians, psychologists, and physical therapists who will work closely with your physician, therapist or chiropractor.  Each specialist contributes a critical and relevant perspective based on your history, physical examination and imaging studies.  Together with you, we'll formulate a realistic, coordinated treatment plan.
There are many ways to approach treatment.  We often use education, physical therapy, targeted exercises, stress management, biofeedback counseling and other techniques, including anesthetic blocks, to help you control your pain.  A combination of these methods will typically be successful.  In some cases spinal surgery may be recommended.  If this is necessary, a team of spine surgeons knowledgeable in the latest techniques will perform your surgery.  Each of our surgeons has completed a five-year residency in orthopedic surgery and additional spine fellowship training.

CLEAR, DIRECT ANSWERS
At The Spine Institute, your questions and concerns will be answered completely.  We will explain to you what you can expect and how to achieve it.  We want you involved with your treatment.  In order to bring your life back into balance, your cooperation and dedication are essential.

PHYSICAL MEDICINE AND REHABILITATION
In physical medicine, we emphasize proven methods of successful long-term back care education and exercise.
Learning more about your back will help you discover some of the reasons why your back hurts and how to relieve that pain.
This ongoing education is combined with an individualized exercise program, tailor-made for your spine and your lifestyle.  We'll find physical activities that you enjoy and can perform on a regular basis.  The Spine Institute also conducts classes in specific back straightening exercises and administers an excellent "back school."
In back treatment, there are no easy answers or quick fixes.  A slow, steady approach leads to more predictable healing, reducing risk of re-injury.  Together, education and exercise will help diminish pain, restore normal flexibility and increase strength.

PSYCHOLOGICAL SERVICES
Pain management counseling is an integral part of your wellness plan at The Spine Institute.  Pain management means working with your emotions, perception, body, behavior and lifestyle.  You will learn ways of sleeping better and coping more effectively with flare-ups, anger, depression, and anxiety about your pain condition.  You will learn how to worry less and regain more control over your life.
Through biofeedback you learn how to posture and move with less pain.  You will also acquire relaxation and pain control techniques to make your life easier.
Again, your participation is essential.  Together, we will develop a workable psychological treatment plan that accurately reflects your needs, goals, medical management and physical conditions and one that works closely with your medical and physical therapies.
